The threat of personal and business cyberattacks is more real and dangerous than ever before. Just a few months ago, CDK Global was the victim of a ransomware attack.

Not only did this cybersecurity breach impact more than 15,000 auto dealerships, but it also affected millions of customers. In the end, CDK Global was forced to pay $25 million in cryptocurrency to get the attack released.

Bad actors are constantly evolving their tactics, waiting for a moment of vulnerability. With National Cybersecurity Month upon us, there’s no better time to take immediate action to secure your personal information and protect your business from falling victim to these increasingly sophisticated attacks.

1. Strengthen Your Passwords –

Before It’s Too Late: Weak passwords are an open invitation for cybercriminals. If you’re reusing the same password across accounts or using simple combinations, you’re at risk. Create strong, unique passwords for every account using a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. If you haven’t updated your passwords in a while, do it now—before someone else takes control.

2. Multi-Factor Authentication is a Must:

Passwords alone aren’t enough anymore. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to add an extra layer of security. It’s quick and easy, and without it, you’re leaving the door wide open for hackers to access your most sensitive accounts.

3. Update Your Software — Immediately:

Outdated software is one of the easiest ways for bad actors to slip into your systems. Regularly updating your operating systems and apps ensures you’re protected against known vulnerabilities. Don’t ignore those update notifications—each one could be your defense against a future attack.

4. Don’t Fall for Phishing Scams:

Phishing attacks are getting more deceptive every day. One careless click on a malicious link or attachment can expose your personal data to cybercriminals. Always double-check before opening emails from unknown senders, and don’t take any chances when something seems off.

5. Secure Your Wi-Fi Network:

An unsecured Wi-Fi network is a goldmine for bad actors. Make sure your Wi-Fi is protected with strong encryption like WPA3. And never use public Wi-Fi for important transactions—unless you’re prepared to risk your data falling into the wrong hands.

6. Backup Your Data Before It’s Gone:

Ransomware attacks are on the rise, and if you don’t have backups of your critical data, you could lose everything. Regularly back up your files to the cloud or an external drive. Without backups, recovering from an attack could be impossible.

7. Install Antivirus and Firewall Protection Now:

Antivirus software and firewalls are your first line of defense against malicious activity. Without them, you’re a sitting duck. Make sure they’re installed, active, and regularly updated to stay ahead of the bad actors constantly looking for ways to break in.

The threats we face in today’s digital world are real, and they’re not going away anytime soon. Don’t wait until you’ve been hacked to take action. By following these steps now, you can protect your personal information, your business, and your peace of mind. This National Cybersecurity Month, be proactive—before it’s too late.
